Pruning
Aborists know you cannot prune a big tree into a small healthy one. A mature tree should ideally relinquish less than 20% of its foliage when pruned. Pruning is generally an exercise in containment.
Tree limbs act as dampeners, moderating stress from strong winds. Removing too much of the canopy can leave the remaining limbs exposed to wind loads they are not accustomed to.
Where a pruning regime is unlikely to achieve containment goals, Greenscene will discuss removal/replacement of the tree with a more suitable species.
Some commonly planted species, (generally exotics like London Planes, Ash, and Robinia), can accomodate ‘pollarding’, a pruning regime where all limbs are taken back to a predetermined length. The tree then responds by creating new shoots that in time develop a small, dense, canopy. Pruning should take place annually, or every other year. Ideally promoting the development of a callous at the wound site, and over time, eventually closing off the original pruning wounds.
Whether reducing weight and deadwood in large eucalypts, or pruning an exotic feature tree, we have the skills and experience to make your tree look its best. Our skills will retain a natural branch structure, facilitate wound closure, and minimise the threat of fungal or insect pests over the long term.
You will never hear us say ‘Don’t worry, it’ll grow back’
Tree and stump removal
Although we advocate pruning, Greenscene performs tree removals as necessary. We can organise tree removal services from straight forward tree felling through to carefully dismantling around or over existing structures and gardens, safely and efficiently.
Our specialty is difficult confined area removals where our advanced rigging techniques allow us to safely remove the largest of trees. We respect the time, the money and the energy investment in your gardens and landscapes.

Root barriers, cabling and bracing
Greenscene installs root barriers for building sites and around existing structures to protect against the damage of invasive roots, as a pro-active measure, or where specified by a building engineer.
Each situation will be assessed with consideration to the species to be retained, the size, its likely root zone, permit requirements, and the nature of the site.
Where a valuable ornamental tree has structural problems, we can implement industry standard bracing systems and other hardware as appropriate. These systems help reduce the likelihood of tree failure, extending the useful life of the tree. However, this work needs careful assessment and consultation around the circumstances and its effectiveness.
FAQS
Your trees are a valuable asset, but should they need regular or heavy pruning to protect surrounding structures or appease concerned neighbours, you need to consider the cost of regular pruning, the potential health impacts on the tree, and the unsightly looking branch structure or canopy that can result from the pruning regime.
Removing a tree and planting a species more suited to the available space is sometimes the best option.

Greenscene will take into account the scope of the work, access to the area, whether you wish to keep firewood, whether the stump is to be ground out, the position of power and phone lines, and more.
The first and most important things you get are honesty and integrity. All jobs are planned and priced with the following in mind:
- The work is done safely and efficiently
- Your assets, including other vegetation, will be left undamaged
- The work area will be left at least as clean as it was found
At Greenscene we perform our work in accordance with industry best practice, and with the Australian standard (AS 4373-2007). We can thin and/or reduce a crown and leave a tree with a natural looking branch scaffold.
Anyone can prune a tree with a pole saw and reduce its size, quickly and cheaply, and often leaving with a healthy profit! Quality pruning is specialised, it takes a little more time and know-how and yes, is a little more expensive. The result however, is far better for the long term health and aesthetics of the tree.
Lopping/topping is the indiscriminate cutting of branches, or the trunk of the tree without regard for the the location and orientation of the cuts, and the amount of foliage left on the limb or tree. The result is often poorly formed and poorly attached regrowth, (branch attachment strength can be as low as 60% or less than a natural branch union), as well as a higher risk of attack by boring insects and fungal infection.
We carry a $10m public liability policy to protect all of our clients, the public, and our team.
You can provide a bed of mulch, preferably out to the drip-line, and some understory shrubs or ground cover. This will provide your trees with the best possible growing conditions. Mulch helps with aeration, encourages a diverse range of soil biota, and is ultimately the single best intervention you can make on the trees behalf.
Watering trees during extended dry periods is also a must.
